My clients are independent professionals, solopreneurs, and mission-driven business owners. I particularly enjoy working with entrepreneurs pursuing their right livelihood and social entrepreneurs. I serve as a thinking partner, assisting my clients to strategize, grow, troubleshoot, overcome obstacles, discover the right path, and stay true to their vision. My approach is a blend of business coaching with mentoring and practical advice.

Since 1992, I've been working with entrepreneurs like these:

  • A training school owner worked with me to begin sharing her innovative ideas about leadership and personal development on a worldwide basis. I coached her on balancing her heavy workload with managing her health, nurturing a new relationship, and writing a book, and advised her on marketing and writing techniques, while growing her school from a local success into a global enterprise.
  • An author and speaker asked me to help her overcome her fears about taking her message to a wider audience, and end her procrastinating. I coached her to uncover the self-sabotaging attitudes and habits that were getting in her way, advised her on productivity techniques, and mentored her in marketing and self-promotion.
  • An MD who founded a medical research facility to develop new treatments for AIDS/HIV hired me to advise his management team about appropriate marketing strategies and coach them to build a marketing action plan, and mentor the doctor/CEO himself on entrepreneurial thinking, better delegation skills, and project management techniques.
  • The new director of a social enterprise asked me to assist with creating a sustainable business model for the venture, and a realistic action plan for her ambitious goals. I advised her on developing a comprehensive business plan, mentored her in fundraising, and coached her to build her management and communication skills.
  • A husband-wife team of psychotherapists hired me to help reorganize their private practices so they could spend more time exploring new frontiers and less on just making a living. I mentored them in appropriate business models and realistic marketing plans, and coached them on overcoming their resistance to marketing, adopting more productive habits, and developing their own potential.

* What is right livelihood? Right livelihood is meaningful work, consciously chosen, which makes the best use of your talents, honors your values, and benefits others. The term originates in Buddhist teachings, where right livelihood is one of the steps of ethical conduct on the Noble Eightfold Path to enlightenment and the end of suffering for all. In modern times, right livelihood has come to mean the work that you were "meant to do."

Right livelihood entrepreneurs serve a higher purpose than personal fulfillment or making a living. Their primary aims are to use their gifts to help others or make the world a better place. They have chosen entrepreneurship as a vehicle for earning a purposeful livelihood.

** What is a social entrepreneur? If your venture has a mission to create social change, and that mission holds a higher priority for you than maximizing personal profits, you may be a social entrepreneur. Social entrepreneurship can take many forms: starting or leading a mission-driven business, founding or directing an innovative nonprofit, implementing a community initiative, serving as an activist, working to educate others through writing, teaching, speaking, or artistic works — or even launching a movement. Social entrepreneurs are innovators; they introduce new approaches to solve social problems.

Related to social entrepreneurship are two other terms: social enterprise and social ventures. Social enterprise is the use of business methods to achieve a social mission. For example, a nonprofit organization that funds its programs by selling products or services. Or a for-profit business that directs a significant percentage of its profits to a social cause, or whose products and services are aimed at solving a social problem. Social venture is a broader term that applies to any organization, business, or initiative launched for the purpose of addressing social problems or creating social change.
